Recent times have been a whirlwind, rollercoaster period in transgender history. We’ve seen amazing breakthroughs for transgender people on TV and in film, and we’ve seen Canada promise new laws to protect transgender people from discrimination.
Frustratingly, for every hurdle overcome, another obstacle rears its head. The Trump administration has revoked guidelines on school bathrooms, allowing students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match them, and how they define their own gender. The current US Vice President is viewed as an overall opponent of LGBTQ rights, contradicting Mr Trump’s early promises to protect LGBTQ rights.
While conflict and progress are nothing new, it’s hard to accept that even two decades into the 21st century, we’re still fighting the same battles.
Transgender History Isn’t Recent History
At Glamour Boutique, we’ve been doing some research into the history of transgender people, crossdressing and the way the world responded through time.
We’re proud to introduce Transgender History: In Pictures, an exploration of gender identity, gender roles and perception through cultures, both ancient and recent.
We’ve discovered a rich, turbulent history, filled with as much adversity as it is with hope and courage. We’ve found evidence from ancient cultures that revered transgender people, incredible individuals that rewrote the rulebook and events that changed the course of history forever.
There have been so many notable transgender people through history that even just choosing who to highlight has been a difficult task; there have been countless people who’ve made an impact on culture, medicine and history. We’re showcasing just a few of those people and their incredible stories.
