Crossdressing in public can be an intimidating experience at times. It is not uncommon to hear about crossdressers facing harassment or being stalked by strangers when they venture outside- it’s because crossdressers are more often the target of violent and malicious individuals. This is something we need to be talking about, and while it might seem like a scary prospect to go out as a crossdresser right now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. You just need to ‘go public’ in an accepting neighborhood and make sure that you are safe, which is why we bring you some useful tips on how to stay safe especially when you are alone in strange places or out at night.
Keep a low profile and blend in
Appearance is key when going out in public. Try to dress age appropriately so you look just like any other woman your age. Try to keep hem lengths conservative and don’t go exaggerated on your boobs size – this can attract the wrong kind of attention. Always walk confidently, with purpose and don’t keep your face in your phone. Pay attention and be aware of everything around you.
Don’t walk alone at night
This is the number one rule. We’re not saying you shouldn’t ever walk by yourself — it’s just that if you decide to do it, you need to be super careful. If you walk home alone at night, you should look out for other people around you or walk in more populated areas. Stay aware of your surroundings so you can notice if someone is following you. Casually look in store window and watch for reflections of anyone following. If you think you’re being followed, cross the street and walk in a different direction to see if they do follow you. If they do, try to call a friend or in an emergency call the police.
Travel in well-lit areas
If you’re walking in a secluded area or a part of town that isn’t very well-lit, you’re more likely to be the target of a crime. If you can, walk on a well-lit street or path and if you do have to walk down a dark route, try to have another path planned out that will take you back to a well-lit area. Make sure to pay attention and stay engaged with the world around you, look out for other people or nearby cars driving slowly. If you ever feel uncomfortable don’t hesitate to make a call.
Be aware of any exits and stay alert
If you’re out at a bar or a club, try to keep track of where the exit is — and how many people are in between you and it. If you’re in a crowd, try to always stay alert so you don’t become a target for any creeps. Avoid substances like drugs and alcohol as they can make you less aware of your surroundings. Be sure to keep an eye on your drink and don’t let anyone behind you or near your bag or purse. If someone is making you feel uncomfortable, walk quickly to the nearest group of people or security guard and ask for help.
Always have your phone with you
Always have your phone on you in case you need to call someone in an emergency. Make sure your phone is fully charged in case you need it to get home safely. Don’t keep your phone in your bag in case you lose it or someone steals it. When possible keep it in your pocket so it is less likely to be stolen and you have easy access in case you need it. If you ever go out with friends and get split up make sure to have your phone on a loud setting to hear when someone is trying to get in touch. If you find yourself in an emergency and you need to call 911, don’t let anyone tell you that you’re wasting their time — it’s their job to respond to emergencies and they’ll come as soon as they can. Worst case, if you feel you are being followed on foot or by car take a picture so you can share it to a friend or a police officer.
Be familiar with the area before you go out
If you’re going to a new place, do a little research to figure out what the area you are going to is like. Try to find out if it is a transgender-friendly place and if there are any safety issues to know about. If the area around where you are going is known to be dangerous, try to go with a group of people or when it is light out to make it safer. It is important to know where you are going and how to get back, even if it is just to a friend’s party. If ever you don’t feel safe make sure to have a backup location whether it be a bar or club.
Carry a whistle
If you’re out alone in a place where you feel unsafe, consider carrying a small whistle on you. Make sure it is in an easy to reach place, like a keyring, if you ever need to use it. If you feel like you are in danger, blow into the whistle loudly, the noise will attract attention and deter a possible attacker. You could always carry pepper spray or another type of weapon for self defense, however, be sure to check your local laws as to what is legal.
Always have a safety plan
It is important to have a safety plan in place should anything go wrong. If possible it is important to have a good support system of friends and family that you can trust and rely on in the event that you need them. Always let someone know you are going out and when you expect to be home. If you are going to be out in public you need to prepare in case someone reacts negatively to you or your appearance. As previously discussed, have an emergency contact list and an exit strategy. If you are planning on visiting a big city, know where the nearest police station is and have a clear plan on how you are getting home. If you keep these things in mind you are more likely to enjoy your time crossdressing in public without having to worry about your safety!
