Dear Shiloh,
First of all, thank you for writing in and sharing something so many girls feel but are sometimes too shy to say. That sneaky five o’clock shadow is one of the most common beauty challenges I hear about, and the good news is that with a few tricks, you can get it under control.
Let’s talk strategy!
Step 1: The Smoothest Shave Possible
Start with the cleanest shave you can manage. Shave after a warm shower so your hair is soft, and use a quality razor (fresh blades only!) and a hydrating shave gel. Take your time and be gentle to avoid irritation. After shaving, pat your skin dry and give it a few minutes to calm before applying anything like a moisturizer. Our makeup artists recommend you let the skin ‘rest’ for at least an hour before applying makeup or you risk irritating the skin.
Step 2: Color Correction is Magic
This is where the magic really happens. Beard shadow often shows up as a blue or grey tint beneath the skin, and using a color corrector helps neutralize it before you even apply foundation. We carry two go-to options:
- Orange is ideal for most skin tones and is the classic choice for neutralizing blue undertones left behind by facial hair.
- Blue can be used as a brightening corrector for areas where your skin tone leans more warm or golden, or to help neutralize redness elsewhere on the face.
For shadow coverage, orange will be your best friend. Dab a little over your upper lip, chin, and jawline—just where you see that discoloration—and blend gently with your fingertip or a damp sponge.
Step 3: Foundation and Concealer to the Rescue
Now go in with a full-coverage foundation. Use a damp beauty sponge or brush and gently press it into the skin. Don’t swipe—you want to preserve that hard-working corrector underneath! After that, use a high-coverage concealer just over the shadow areas if you need a little extra help. Blend it in by patting, not rubbing.
Step 4: Lock It In
Set everything with a translucent powder, or a slightly tinted one that matches your skin tone. Press it into the skin using a puff for better coverage and staying power. If you’re heading out or doing a shoot, a spritz of setting spray on top seals the deal and keeps everything looking fresh.
One Last Thing… Even with perfect technique, you might still catch glimpses of that shadow in harsh lighting or in certain mirrors. And that’s okay. Beauty isn’t about perfection—it’s about expression, confidence, and joy. You’re doing something brave and beautiful by embracing your femininity, and no shadow (literal or metaphorical) can dim that light.
