En Femme: How to Learn to Walk in Heels

For many CD and TG girls, one of the hardest things to master is walking in heels. While the thought of wearing heels can be so exciting it can also be intimidating, forcing us into a life of flats. But why be confined to flats when you can be your most glamorous self in a nice pair of heels. Now we know going from flats to heels will take some practice, maybe even a lot of practice. But as the old saying goes, “practice makes perfect.” Plus, with so many different heights and styles to choose from, the decision on which heels to buy can be just as nerve-racking as learning to walk in them. We’ll have you in those sexy stilettos before you know it!

What You Need to Know About Heels

Right from the get-go, the number of choices out there can be overwhelming. Between style, colors, and of course the size of the heel, you can spend a long time just trying to select a pair that you feel comfortable with. While there may not be a pair of men’s heels, in the literal sense, do know that there are heels out there sized large enough for a male foot. As the cross-dressing and T-Girl community continue to grow, more and more companies realize the need for larger heels and are expanding the sizes in their line to accommodate this. These larger shoes are made for a masculine foot but are completely feminine in appearance. Once you decide on a pair of heels, the most important thing is to try them on for fit and then practice walking around. We highly suggest practicing at home. Try using easy walking surfaces like a carpet (which is the best surface to practice on) for testing the waters. Try walking in front of a mirror so you can see how you’re doing. Another great way to get used to the feel of heels is to put them on while you’re doing some chores around the house. Definitely continue to practice at home or in a safe environment as you do not want to be out en femme still unsure of your abilities and have a heel disaster of epic proportions.

A Good Starter Heel

With so many options, you may ask “What would be a good starter heel?” We highly suggest to start low and work your way up. Try a 3-inch block heel, or a 2-inch kitten block heel, as there is just a slight arch and the low block heel will offer plenty of stability and tread for grip. Make sure when starting out not to go higher than 3-inch heels, as it is a perfect middle ground for beginners. Another option here would be an ankle boot. The ankle boot will help give your ankles extra support as your feet get used to walking at an angle. Your ankles will need to gain the strength to get used to walking in heels, so we recommend a lower heel.

Gaining Confidence

As you start to get more comfortable in a lower heel, you can gradually work your way up. A great middle of the road shoe is a platform heel. These are usually 5-inches, but the platform/chunky heel will help give extra support. These platforms will train your legs to get used to wearing a heel and will give you good posture as a natural result which is a bonus. It is important at this stage to make sure you master the different situations you will need to navigate with high heels, like stairs, uneven surfaces, getting in and out of a car and sitting and standing. Try and relax your legs so you do not look stiff while walking. Once you’re comfortable and confident, it is time to take the next step.

The Next Step

Now that you’ve practiced in 3-inch heels and the higher platform or block heels, it is time to get those stilettos you’ve had your eye on and give them a whirl. Once you hit the 5-inch heel or stiletto, you will still want to give them a spin around the house to make sure your footing is solid, similar to our previous steps. When you’re ready to wear your stilettos out, just be sure to take it slow and remember all you’ve learned. Before you know it you will be able to walk in heels like a pro!

Walking in high heels aren’t something that most people can just slip on and go. Even our genetic female counterparts had to take their time and learn to walk in their heels properly. If you don’t let the prospect of high heels scare you off, once you’ve mastered them, you will be out there strutting your stuff with confidence and looking sexy while doing so.
