Get Luscious Locks: How to Pick a Wig That Suits You

One of the most important parts of our Femme transformation is the wig. A wig can make or break your appearance when out. It’s important to match your wig to your facial features and skin tone to give you an authentic look. You also want to be sure to pick an age-appropriate style and color as to not draw extra attention to yourself (unless that’s what you want). It may take some trial and error, but once you find a wig that works for you, you will be well on your way to perfecting your Femme look.

Color choices: When deciding what wig color will work best, it is good to match colors to your skin tone. Most people fall into two categories – warm skin tone or cool skin tone. Your eyes can play a part in this as well as you may want a hair color to compliment your eye color. Try picking a wig color that is the opposite of your skin tones. This will help to balance your complexion. If you choose a wig that is too similar to your skin tone, you can look washed out or faded. Let’s look at some examples:

Warm skin tone: If you are someone with a warm skin tone, try picking a wig with cool tones to compliment your skin. Colors that work here are blacks or medium browns. So a happy medium would be a brunette wig. If you are looking to go blonde, try a pale blonde or platinum.

Cool Skin tone: For those of you with cool skin tones, a dark brown, red or blonde wig would work great. If you’re looking for a black wig, try one that has warm highlights as it will help add some definition to your look. Chocolate is a great description to look for here. If you go blonde, be sure to avoid platinum. Key words to look for on the wigs would be honey or warm.

Length: When it comes to length, it is best to find a wig that will compliment your facial structure. Similar to choosing a color that will work best with your skin tone, it is equally important to find a wig that’s length works best with your features. There are so many different face structures so we will touch upon a few of the most common.

Oblong: Since an oblong face is longer than it is wide, try a hairstyle with bangs. Bangs hide the forehead and so help shorten the length of the face. Curls work here too. Definitely stay away from straight styles that have a straight cut. This will further elongate your face.

Square: A very common facial structure on men is the square. This is where you have a wider hairline and jaw. While we always recommend stretch cap wigs due to the male head being a bit larger than their female counterparts, it is definitely a must here. Try a layered or curly wig to help with breaking up the straight lines of your face. Avoiding one-length hairstyles or wigs with a lot of volume around your face will help as well. A feather cut that closely frames the face is a good idea as this helps make the face seem narrower and less square.

Round: Someone with a round face has a wider hairline (think stretch cap again) and fullness below the cheekbones. In some cases, the neck will look smaller as well. Try a linear or geometric style. With round faces, adding height and length will narrow your cheeks a bit. Do not use a short style wig as it will accentuate your smaller neck.

Oval: If you fall into the oval face category, you are the winner! An oval-shaped face can adapt to pretty much any style wig as there is really no dominant area of the face. Since you have carte blanche with your choices, we would just recommend finding a wig that matches your skin tone and age. Other than that, just enjoy trying different styles.

Straight or Curly: As with everything else we’ve discussed, it will come down to preference. Most people will think that straight hair will be easier to maintain, especially if you are a beginner. That is not necessarily the case. Straight hair that is not cared for properly can easily become a real mess. Since curly hair already has some pre-styled waviness or heavy curls, they will need a little less maintenance. Regardless, any style wig should be cared for correctly and if you don’t do so, you will be buying new wigs quite often. At the very least keep your wig in a hairnet or on a wig head if possible remembering to brush before and after use.
When deciding on straight or curly, be sure to match a style that works with your facial features, as it will be key to perfecting your look.

Making a Statement: Most girls have a few wigs on hand depending on the occasion. You can stay with a subdued hairstyle for an afternoon out shopping or a more glamorous looking wig for a dinner party or night out with the girls. You can also go in a totally different direction and go for a Drag Queen Wig that will shout to the world “Hey, look at me!” Drag Queen Wigs are a whole other animal as their look is always over the top. If you plan on doing a drag show or just personally like that style for yourself, a good rule of thumb for a drag wig is “The bigger the better.”

For those of you who are new to wigs or even if you’re a seasoned wig wearer that may be looking for something new, these tips can help you get to that next level. But at the end of the day, your wig choices will come down to personal preference. The important part is looking good and feeling good. When that happens, everything else will fall into place.
